A Corporate Mission Abroad: International Volunteering at Semoulin Packaging
Marion, a young engineer at Semoulin Packaging, specializes in packaging and conditioning. A graduate of ESIReims, she joined the company for a specific mission: assessing the carbon footprint of products and contributing to the continuous improvement of internal processes.
At Semoulin Packaging, innovation and sustainability go hand in hand, thanks to the talented individuals who join the company.
“The goal of my mission is to calculate the carbon footprint of the products manufactured at Semoulin Packaging by gathering data from suppliers regarding raw materials, production at Semoulin Packaging, and transport for deliveries to clients. Essentially, it’s a life cycle assessment (LCA) that highlights the different stages of a product’s life and identifies when it has an environmental impact. After collecting this data, an LCA report will be generated and sent to the final clients. This report will also help Semoulin Packaging visualize the key moments when their products impact the environment the most, allowing them to find solutions and innovations to reduce their carbon footprint. It’s an exciting mission that enables me to have a concrete impact on both the environment and the industry.”
A technical and strategic challenge that aligns perfectly with the company’s DNA, which is constantly seeking sustainable innovations.
A Science-Focused Pathway Leading to Packaging
Initially passionate about science, Marion pursued a scientific high school diploma (Bac S) and then a degree in Earth and Life Sciences. However, a change in direction altered her career path.
“I discovered the world of packaging by chance while exploring different study programs. I then pursued a specialized technical diploma (DUT) in packaging and conditioning, where I learned about logistics, design, eco-design, and quality control. What attracted me the most was the combination of science, technology, and aesthetics. After that, joining ESIReims, an engineering school specializing in packaging, was a logical step.”
A choice that opened the doors to a fast-growing industry that constantly adapts to environmental and industrial challenges.
A Deep Dive into a More Complex Sector Than It Seems
Often perceived as a field focused solely on producing packaging, the packaging industry is actually multi-faceted.
“You don’t realize until you’re in it just how much there is to control and learn! It’s not just about selecting a material and assembling it—there’s real technical and strategic expertise behind every piece of packaging. What I love is its versatility: throughout my career, I’ll be able to work in a wide range of industries, from chocolate and wine & spirits to cosmetics.”
This insight demonstrates that packaging is much more than just a container—it is a driver of innovation and adaptation across various markets.
Why Choose Semoulin Packaging? A Commitment That Makes a Difference
Graduating last October, Marion was looking for an international experience when she heard about an opportunity at Semoulin Packaging.
“I had just finished my studies and wanted to go abroad. Then I heard about this mission in Belgium at Semoulin Packaging. The timing was perfect! I was particularly drawn to the environmental aspect of the project—a real plus for my CV and something that aligns with my personal values.”
Joining Semoulin Packaging allowed her to discover an environment where innovation extends beyond products to an entire industrial and human-centered approach.
A Human-Sized Company Where It’s Great to Work
Beyond technical innovations, Semoulin Packaging stands out for its family-like atmosphere and close-knit teams. This welcoming environment struck Marion as soon as she arrived, just as Adrien had mentioned in his own portrait.
“What really surprised me upon arrival was how warm the welcome was. Everyone knows each other, and there are no barriers. You immediately feel comfortable, which is rare in an industrial company.”
A workplace culture that reflects the company’s spirit: close to its employees, its clients, and engaged in a dynamic of continuous innovation.
A Promising Sector for Young Graduates
The packaging industry is undergoing a major transformation, particularly with the reduction of plastic use and the search for more sustainable alternatives. This shift makes it a field full of opportunities for new graduates.
“There’s a high demand for specialized skills! Packaging plays a key role in reducing the carbon footprint. Companies need young engineers to help meet new environmental and regulatory challenges. It’s definitely not a saturated field—far from it! Whether on the supplier or client side, there are numerous projects and highly diverse roles.”
A versatility that also allows for career exploration:
“After graduating, we become packaging engineers, but the career possibilities are vast. We can work as project managers in packaging departments, design teams, or research & development. It’s also possible to become a packaging developer, packaging buyer… In small companies like Semoulin Packaging, you get to do a bit of everything. That’s what helps develop valuable skills for the future.”
And What About Belgium?
Now settled in Belgium for the duration of her mission, Marion has adapted quickly to her new environment.
“Honestly, yes, I’m settling in just fine here! People are incredibly welcoming and friendly… which makes me forget about the cold and gray skies. I think we have a lot to learn from the Belgians when it comes to hospitality.”
A Bright Future Between Expertise and Passion for Packaging
With a strong experience at Semoulin Packaging already under her belt, Marion is considering continuing her career in the packaging industry—perhaps exploring sectors such as chocolate, wine & spirits, or even breweries.
“I’d love to stay in Belgium for up to two years, then move on to discover new horizons. My goal is to explore as many aspects of the packaging engineering field as possible because it’s a rich and constantly evolving industry.”
An inspiring career path that perfectly illustrates how Semoulin Packaging supports young talents in shaping the future of sustainable packaging.
